Quadrupole splitting of Fe(II) spin crossover compounds study of temperature and pressure dependence and the implication for the interaction mechanism

The temperature and pressure dependence of the quadrupole splitting ΔE Q of the 3/2→1/2 nuclear Mossbauer transition of57Fe in the spin crossover compounds [Fe x Zn1−x (2-pic)3]Cl2⋆EtOH and the deuterated analog [Fe x Zn1−x (2-pic-ND2)3] Cl2⋆EtOD (2-pic=2-picolylamine) have been studied. The change of ΔE Q can be linearly related to the defomation of the lattice as observed by X-ray measurements. The dependence of ΔE Q on temperatureT, pressurep, and the fraction γ of molecules in the electronic high spin state in the pure iron (x=1) compounds is therefore interpreted as a result of the change of the lattice contribution to the electric field gradient (EFG) at the nucleus only. Optical polarization of neutron-rich sodium isotopes and β-NMR measurements of quadrupole moments

The nuclear quadrupole moments of neutron-rich sodium isotopes are being investigated with the help of in-beam polarization by optical pumping in combination with $\beta$-NMR techniques. First measurements have yielded the quadrupole splittings of NMR signals in the lattice of LiNbO$_{3}$ for the isotopes $^{26}$Na, $^{27}$Na and $^{28}$Na. Interaction constants and ratios of the electric quadrupole moments are derived. In view of future experiments, $\beta$-decay asymmetries for the sequence of isotopes up to the $N$=20 neutron shell closure, $^{26-31}$Na, have been measured.

Recent developments in the evaluation of Mössbauer line intensities

The angular dependence of the intensities of pure or mixed multipole transitions is formulated in a new fashion, which takes into account arbitrary texture of the Mossbauer absorber ranging from complete orientation (single crystals) over preferred orientation to random powders and an anisotropic absorption fraction of the nuclei. The application of the theory is demonstrated by means of typical examples from the literature.

Electric hyperfine interaction in199Hg fluorides

With the current integration technique, the Mossbauer effect on the 158 keV, 5/2−→1/2− transition in199Hg was studied using the cubic HgF2 and the tetragonal Hg2F2 as absorbers; in the latter, a quadrupole splittingeQVzz=}- 9.0(2) mm/s was observed. Electron densities were calculated with the self-consistent-charge-extended-Hueckel-molecular-orbital method and δ〈r2〉=(3.26±0.11) fm2 derived. From the quadrupole splitting and the calculation, an effective antishielding factor almost twice that of the neutral Hg atom is derived.

Analysis of the Intermediate-State Contributions to Neutrinoless Double β− Decays

A comprehensive analysis of the structure of the nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) of neutrinoless double beta-minus (0νβ-β-) decays to the0+ground and first excited states is performed in terms of the contributing multipole states in the intermediate nuclei of0νβ-β-transitions. We concentrate on the transitions mediated by the light (l-NMEs) Majorana neutrinos. As nuclear model we use the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) with a realistic two-nucleon interaction based on the Bonn one-boson-exchangeGmatrix. Compton Scattering by the Proton using a Large-Acceptance Arrangement

Compton scattering by the proton has been measured over a wide range covering photon energies 250 MeV lt or approximately=E/sub gamma / lt or approximately=800 MeV and photon scattering angles 30 degrees lt or approximately= theta /sub gamma //sup lab/ lt or approximately=150 degrees , using the tagged-photon facility at MAMI (Mainz) and the large-acceptance arrangement LARA. The previously existing data base on proton Compton scattering is greatly enlarged by more than 700 new data points. Charge radii of neon isotopes across the sd neutron shell

We report on the changes in mean square charge radii of unstable neon nuclei relative to the stable Ne-20, based on the measurement of optical isotope shifts. The studies were carried out using collinear laser spectroscopy on a fast beam of neutral neon atoms. High sensitivity on short-lived isotopes was achieved thanks to nonoptical detection based on optical pumping and state-selective collisional ionization, which was complemented by an accurate determination of the beam kinetic energy. Measurement of the b hadron lifetime with the dipole method

A measurement of the average lifetime of b hadrons has been performed with the dipole method on a sample of 260000 hadronic Z decays recorded with the ALEPH detector during 1991. The dipole is the distance between the vertices built in the opposite hemispheres. The mean dipole is extracted from all the events without attempting b enrichment. Comparing the average of the data dipole distribution with a Monte Carlo calibration curve obtained with different b lifetimes, an average b hadron lifetime of 1.51 +/- 0.08 ps is extracted. Nuclear response functions in homogeneous matter with finite range effective interactions

The question of nuclear response functions in a homogeneous medium is examined. A general method for calculating response functions in the random phase approximation (RPA) with exchange is presented. The method is applicable for finite-range nuclear interactions. Examples are shown in the case of symmetric nuclear matter described by a Gogny interaction. It is found that the convergence of the results with respect to the multipole truncation is quite fast. Various approximation schemes such as the Landau approximation, or the Landau approximation for the exchange terms only, are discussed in comparison with the exact results.
